Submit. v. tr. 3. To present (something) to the consideration of judgement of another.
Most of the other definitions involve demeaning oneself. Not something I cotton to.
But that is the word used when one enters work into a juried exhibition and so that’s what I spent the better part of the past two days working on: selecting the works that I felt best represented the theme, on the edge, getting the opinions of the Muse and a very good friend who has been an art curator for years, whittling sixteen selections down to two, fine-tuning one of the images and, uh, submitting them.
On July 31 I’ll find out if my work will be part of a special exhibition of Bay Area artists at the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco.
Being a fan of both low-key and high-key, I put forth one of each. Long-time visitors have seen them before. The jury hasn’t.

Oh dear dear me… this is truly a hard one. I have no idea how you’re going to pick from the two absolutely brilliant images, honestly! Needless to say I love both. Of course the first one is more dramatic and eye catching, however I would choose the Tahoe Streak as that shy yet sharp white streak, suddenly stopping almost half way, feels more “On the edge”. Whichever one you pick though, imho, they are both winners, so ALL THE BEST by friend! 🙏👍

…..’scrape’ isn’t just arresting; it is thrilling. Imagining it covering an entire wall, lights out, and only that slash, that scrape, of otherness is to plunge the viewer into introspection and silence.

The DeYoung Museum would be a good place for your work. If both get in, you’ll have taken the high(-key) road and you’ll have taken the low(-key) road.

In my experience, Michael, judges are quite fickle and capricious, to us a few polite words, and It is always somewhat of a mystery how they come to their conclusions. As so many others have said, both images are exceptional and you should be proud of them irrespective of the decision of the judges.

Good luck. Both are outstanding and should stand out from the crowd. But one never knows what judges will feel. For what it’s worth, they are both winners in my book.

The benefit of sticking your neck out is that you get to see more. The risk is the possibility of having it cut off. In most instances I’m inclined to say that the benefit outweighs the risk.
