    With so much of the action being at the left, did you consider cropping off the mostly black portion at the right? I realize that in so doing you would have lost part of the interesting “isthmus” in the lower right. I’ve sometimes faced that kind of quandary: something in a corner displeases me (often by not being in sharp focus), and I could eliminate that unwanted area by cropping off a vertical strip or a horizontal strip, but either way the crop would also eliminate something I’d like to keep. I wonder how viewers would react to a picture in which a corner rather than a strip had been removed, leaving a non-rectangular frame with six sides. In any case, you may be quite happy with your picture as it is, and can consider my question hypothetical.

      Thanks very much, Steve. I thought long and hard about this crop and sought the opinion of the Muse, who is the Queen of Crops. The isthmus was a major appeal to me and I sought to balance the shot by extending the aspect ratio to allow it more length and thus visual weight. It was originally 4×5 and I changed it to 3×2 to achieve that balance. It’s a tough one. In truth, the jury is still out.

    Well, this member of the jury approves. I like the dynamism, and the sense that the lower water’s receding while the reinforcing wave is coming in from the upper left.

    I like the balance in this. The motion not covering the entire frame seems reminiscent of what I have experienced at times along the Maine coast when the wave is receding. 3000 miles apart yet similarly close.
