Smoke and fog make a good pairing. Without your explanation there’d be no way to tell it wasn’t all fog, which San Francisco is so well known for.

But no orange-yellow? The buildings peeking out are quite beautiful, but this is not the beauty we wish for.

This was at an altitude of about 1000 feet. Just above the fog bank that was making it extremely red, but also above some of the atmosphere so the filtration quality wasn’t as strong. This is about what it looked like at that altitude. We live at about 700 feet, deep in fog, and below another 300 feet of smoke, and it was like Bladerunner.

Oh, I see. I read that places above 4000 ft were in the clear up here, but it’s not worth the effort – too far away. What altitude can do though! And what some good stiff winds could do, if they would only show up.

Unfortunately, winds will cause the fires to spread. A persistent gentle breeze, however…

Thank you very much, Hedy. We have a nephew in Portland and we think about him a lot. He’s doing OK but the air there is really bad. And there are parts of Oregon that are devastated. Lots of life, loss of property. And it’s not over. Thoughts and prayers to them constantly.
