June 18, 2018, Closeburn Beach Lookout, Lake Wakatipu, New Zealand. A year ago this week, on our first evening of a photo workshop led by Gary Hart and Don Smith. A few kilometers west of Queenstown. Although Mother Nature was very kind to us regarding lighting and sky, we were not yet used to freezing fingers from her June winter.

Wakatipu: ’tis music to my ears! For whatever reason, all my pictures of the lake were east of Queenstown. While the cold you encountered in the southern winter may have been an obstacle, at least you didn’t have to endure the biting sandflies of summer.

It is a most beautiful country. The cold wasn’t an obstacle, but it did take getting used to. We did get sandflies later.

Guess I spoke too soon about the sandflies in winter.

Those sandflies are tough critters.

It is one of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful, countries I have ever visited. And everyone I met was genuine, down-to-earth, smart, and in good humor.

Beautiful landscape, Michael. The cold must have been a bit of a shock coming from a land where freezing is rare. I live where it is common but still find it difficult to bear at times.

Thank you very much Steve. Actually it gets to and below freezing in the San Francisco Bay area in the winter at night pretty often. We actually got used to it pretty quickly, but the first night out I didn’t bring gloves with me and it was a bit uncomfortable. Managed to get some good shots though. This week is New Zealand week and unlike most weeks I will be posting daily.

In awe… Michael! Did you use very slow shuttle speed?

Thank you! I used a neutral density filter and the shutter speed was somewhere around 30 seconds.

Such extraordinary scenery….I’ve always wanted to go there….my mother went there, and many other places, and NZ was at the top of her favorite list.

New Zealand has more concentrated amazing variety of scenery than any other place I’ve been by far.

Thank you very much. It was not bad once we got used to it. The winters in the south are not that different from northern California toward the mountains.
