June 19, 2020 — Point Reyes National Seashore, California . . .Had Turner been on the beach at Point Reyes with a camera. Which, of course, he wasn’t. This is an experiment in ICM — Intentional Camera Motion. As one might expect, the subject was moving as well, as waves are wont to do. (Nikon D850, Nikon 24-120mm f/4G VR. RAW processing in DxO PhotoLab 3.3; Editing in Adobe Photoshop.)

Inspiration / Performance Photography / Photo Log / Photography / Positivity

July 14, 2011, San Jose Blues Festival, San Jose, California. Here’s a secret: I really enjoy doing performance photography. But it’s not a concentration: I’ve only posted performance photography twice before. The first was in my fourth blog post ever, on November 30, 2018. Today, for reasons that might already be obvious, I’ve decided to post another. This is Ruthie Foster. She grew up with music in her genes and in her early teens she […]

August 13, 2006, Big Sur Coast, California / June 27, 2017, Silicon Valley, California Gray day. The streak on horizon was the appeal. It was all there was. Shoot. Crap shoot, really. This was long before I was shooting RAW, so no direction home in editing. Gray on gray on gray. Blah. Nothing. Ain’t it hard when I discovered that it really wasn’t where it’s at… It sat in archives for almost nine years. One […]

June 13, 2020. Silicon Valley, California. Submit. v. tr. 3. To present (something) to the consideration of judgement of another. Most of the other definitions involve demeaning oneself. Not something I cotton to. But that is the word used when one enters work into a juried exhibition and so that’s what I spent the better part of the past two days working on: selecting the works that I felt best represented the theme, on the […]

January 17, 2012 — Sonoma County Coast, California Returning with new eyes to a shot taken eight years ago. I’ve just competed a series of webinars by Bruce Percy. He describes himself as a black and white photographer working in color. His sensitivity to tonal balance is inspirational and very instructive. This shot is pretty much the same as the way I left it the last time I worked on it almost three years ago, […]

Chewy — What’s in a Name?

May 28, 2016. Silicon Valley, California (Photo May 30, 2015, Sonoma County Coast.) While thinking about what to say in a notice to family and friends, I recalled something that I’d read or heard that the number of nicknames one has for someone is a mark of the degree of affection that one has for them. That got me and the Muse to thinking… Here’s what we recalled, in no particular order: Chewy, Chew, Chewbacca, […]

The Pacific, Living up to its Name

May 12, 2020 — San Mateo County Coast, California Driving has always been allowed in California. There is simply nowhere worthwhile to park. All state beach (meaning “beach”) parking has been blocked. But there had been rain (finally) and the sky promised to be interesting, I drove to the coast to try my luck. I was expecting reasonably good surf for wave photos. Six to nine feet was the forecast. I was pumped. The very […]
