April 10, 2015, Hurricane Point, Big Sur Coast. August 8, 2017, my office. Morning of May 13, 2021, my office. Evening of May 13, 2021, my office. On January 12, 2019, I wrote in my twelfth blog post: My dog and I decided that conditions were right for a ride down the coast. Travels with Chewy. And Nikon. We made it as far south as Hurricane Point. Crystal clear. The horizon went halfway to Hawaii. […]

July 13, 2018 — San Mateo County Coast; February 24, 2021 — My Office In exploring the essence of the essence, I reimagined a few old favorites. This was shot in the late afternoon/early evening as sunrays found their way through low clouds/high fog on the coast. The subject, really, is contrast, texture, and glow. The philosophy is adding by taking away. What isn’t the picture? Remove it or reduce it. Distill. (Canon G7X. RAW […]

January 10, 2021 — San Francisco, California More big surf at Ocean Beach. Weather Service said 20 to 25 feet and they were right. I shot 1,946 frames with an eight-pound camera/lens in a little less than three hours. Good upper-body exercise. Some of those shots used fast shutter speed and some slow. Some with camera held steady and some with intentional camera motion. Interesting phenomenon: Some ICM shots of heavy insane surf end up […]

December 26, 2017. The Sea Ranch, Sonoma Coast, California. It had been stormy. We spent Christmas hunkered down. The coast had been battered with wind and rain. For the longest time, it seemed, we weren’t sure if it would go on and on or if the rage would finally be over. We drifted off into an uneasy sleep with nothing resolved. The morning was still unsettled. But then suddenly it was over. The midday brought […]

July 25, 2020 — San Mateo County Coast, California; September 20, 2020 — My Office Revisiting the same shot that was featured in the September 12 post. Same shot; different crop. Looking at this while absorbing the current scene led me to make the following observation: On either side of the line can be an infinity of nuance. But the line itself? Sharp. No ambiguity. That’s one reason why these views of the horizon bring […]

Note to email subscribers: To get a far better look at the picture, open the email and then click on the title of the blog and you’ll be taken to the actual blog website. It’s always a much more satisfying view when you do this. July 27, 2020 — San Francisco Bay Area, California Arches are inclusive. Arches form bridges, not walls. Even the most delicate arch can form the strongest structure. (Nikon D850, Nikon 24-120mm […]

June 26, 2020 —Side of Mt.Tamalpais, Above Stinson Beach, Marin County, California ICM impression of an incoming fog bank. Years ago, someone — who was so much younger then — wondered what it was like to be inside a cloud. Years before that, another person — who was sooo much younger then — wondered what it was like to be inside the rings of Saturn. In both cases, wondering was more fun. A reminder that […]
