Take Another Look

December 24, 2018 — Sonoma County Coast. May 4, 2021, My office. I’ve done a lot of photogralogical* archive digs in the past months and have come up with an astonishing number of shots that were overlooked on first, second, and even third look. A number of my mentors have counseled not to even look at a shoot until days, weeks, or months after to shoot. They say it makes it easier to be objective. […]

March 15, 2021 — Sonoma County Coast, California While the house was in the hands of the realtor being prepped for sale, we took off for the coast for a few days. Early one afternoon, clouds cast shadows on the sea. Perfect for intentional camera motion. That shot — one of many, because ICM is a numbers game — formed the basis for the completed picture, which doesn’t look anything at all like what was […]

March 22, 2021 — Sonoma County Coast. I’ve shot and I’ve processed a hundred new pictures I’ve formed and I’ve weathered scores of opinions I’ve kept and I’ve scrapped a thousand examples I’ve spent time away in the course of my journeys I’ve reflected so much and concluded the essence And it’s a soft, it’s a soft, it’s a soft, and it’s a soft It’s a soft rain of pictures gonna fall   Yes, I […]

July 9, 2020 — San Mateo County, California. Feb 12, 2021 My Office. On February 9, we lost Chick Corea. A phenomenal composer, pianist, arranger, and producer. A mentor. A marvelous human being. Here’s an excerpt from his farewell message: “It is my hope that those who have an inkling to play, write, perform or otherwise, do so. If not for yourself then for the rest of us. It’s not only that the world needs […]

In the Mist

Hard to believe this was shot in the same place and in the same hour as the one in the last post. But it was. Despite the stormy day, this shot is tranquil. ICM does strange things — especially in a misty environment. The 25-foot waves were there. There are even some in this shot, but the mist and the intentional camera motion obscures them. (Nikon D850, Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR zoom. RAW processing […]

January 10, 2021 — San Francisco, California More big surf at Ocean Beach. Weather Service said 20 to 25 feet and they were right. I shot 1,946 frames with an eight-pound camera/lens in a little less than three hours. Good upper-body exercise. Some of those shots used fast shutter speed and some slow. Some with camera held steady and some with intentional camera motion. Interesting phenomenon: Some ICM shots of heavy insane surf end up […]

July 25, 2020 — San Gregorio, California; The past few days — My Office Here’s the simple reason for my prolonged absence. Obsession. I’ve been deeply immersed in a Black and White post-processing and printing workshop which is taking me apart piece by piece as a photographer and gradually reassembling me with new eyes and new skills. I’m getting closer, but still not finished. (Not quite finished with the workshop. I’ll never be finished learning.) […]

July 12, 2020 — Marin County Headlands, California; September 24, 2020 — My Office …realized. I woke up at 4 a.m. with a different treatment of an ICM image from a previous shoot in mind. I went back to sleep with a smile in my face. A few hours later, not even halfway through my first cup of coffee, there it was. And here it is. Despite what it says below, this was all done […]

A Line

July 25, 2020 — San Mateo County Coast, California; September 20, 2020 — My Office Revisiting the same shot that was featured in the September 12 post. Same shot; different crop. Looking at this while absorbing the current scene led me to make the following observation: On either side of the line can be an infinity of nuance. But the line itself? Sharp. No ambiguity. That’s one reason why these views of the horizon bring […]

August 14, 2020 — Sonoma County Coast, California; September 17, 2020 — My Office This was another “nothing” photoshoot. I was playing with Intentional Camera Motion while waiting for the sun to go down and the Belt of Venus to appear for the shot I had in mind. That shot met expectations. The ICMs — not so much. Not on first look. Or second. Or third. Today I wondered if there was anything there after […]

September 6, 2018 — West Shore Lake Tahoe, California Same shot as in yesterday’s post. I saw this interpretation in my mind’s eye last night, but it was too late to work on it. I put considerable time into it today. New observation: The more minimal and subtle the picture, the more time goes into it. But I was really hummin’. (Nikon D850, Tamron SP 24–70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2. ISO 64, 1/2 sec at […]

Let’s Twist Again

September 6, 2018 — West Shore Lake Tahoe, California One of my first tries at Intentional Camera Motion. I’d given it a shot several years earlier and then let the idea drift. Then on this darkening September evening I sprang (well, really, twisted) back into action. I was originally inspired by Bay Area photographer, Audrey Heller, whose Linger Collection made me do just that. I’ll do a few more this weekend — like I did […]

August 16, 2020 — Sonoma County Coast, California A blindingly bright afternoon. Calm day — but each wavelet was its own mirror, each adding to the millions of tiny suns out on the water. ICM — Intentional Camera Motion — does wonderful things with time and space as they combine in the camera in myriad mystical modes. Then in the computer, more magic happens. (Nikon D850, Nikon 24-120mm f/4G VR. RAW processing and initial editing in […]
