Picking up from the December 31 post. But the storm wasn’t all Rothko. Something else was afoot with the weather. Maybe Mother Nature had been listening to Duke Ellington — as I have been recently — and misinterpreted Take the “A” Train as Take the A-Frame. Or something… I don’t know… (Nikon D850, Nikon 24-120mm f/4G VR. RAW processing in DxO PhotoLab 3.1; Editing in Adobe Photoshop.) More seascape horizons: www.amagaphoto.com

December 29, 2019 — Sonoma Coast In her comment on yesterday’s post, Margot pointed out to me that stormy weather brings me Turner, while calm weather brings me Rothko. Wise and helpful words. But Mother Nature works in wonderful and mysterious ways. In the morning, her storm brought me Rothko. Who am I to refuse? The afternoon? Well, stay tuned… (Nikon D850, Nikon 24-120mm f/4G VR. I want to propose something. Here’s the background: Last week, as I was driving home from an appointment, I crested the pass above Fremont and got a view across the bay and beyond the Santa Cruz Mountains toward the west. It looked promising for some dramatic horizon seascapes. Because I always have my pocket camera with me, I drove straight to the coast. My expectations mounted during the nearly an hour-and-a-half drive, but when I […]

The Solitary Search, With an Object Lesson

November 27, 2019 — San Mateo County Coast It was a dark and stormy day; the rain fell in torrents — except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the bluffs (for it is on the San Mateo County coast that our scene lies), attempting to remove his hat, but barely agitating the stubborn photographer who hand-held against all odds… Days later, through one of the […]

November 27, 2019 — San Mateo County Coast The storm was on its way out, heading east to make headlines. This was its last hurrah; clear sky was visible through the last squall. I’ve mentioned that many (most?) of my influences worked in paint, not pixels. Chief among them is JMW Turner. To me, his later work changed the world of art definitively — to me, he is the father of Impressionism. Toward the end […]

May 8, 2015. Devil’s Slide, near Pacifica, California / November 27, 2019. Silicon Valley. Devil’s Slide revisited. Again. I sat at the computer today, looking forward by looking back. The image whispered, “noir” and I went under its spell. I’d have been a fool not to. A strange image for Thanksgiving, but it it’s from a favorite shoot — for which I am thankful. And I am thankful to all who visit, follow, read, view, […]

April 6, 2013 — Sonoma coast. November 21, 2019 — Silicon Valley What struck me about this scene was the texture of the water below the creamy sky. It still strikes me. What struck me about the Sony RX100 was the notion of getting exhibition-sized prints out of a pocket camera. That notion stopped striking me years ago. The sticker on the front of the camera quietly proclaims Zeiss Optics. Zeiss. That means quality. Not so […]

May 8, 2015. Devil’s Slide, near Pacifica, California. For Chewy’s Birthday walk, we settled on two places: Land’s End in San Francisco and Devil’s slide. Chewy always loved the sea breeze. Highway 1 had years prior been routed through a tunnel at Devil’s Slide (that portion having lived up to its name far too often), leaving the old Highway 1 free to be used as a park with long stretches for Chewy to run and […]

August 25, 2019; Beachy Head, The Seven Sisters, East Sussex. How calm is the blue hour? This calm. This seascape was shot three minutes (to the second) before the lighthouse image in the last post. (Nikon D850, Tamron SP 24–70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2. RAW processing in DxO PhotoLab 2.3; Editing in Adobe Photoshop.) For more seascape horizons, go to www.amagaphoto.com.

Portugal, August 17: Atlantic Horizon Looking West

August 17, 2019; Caplela de Nossa Senhora de Peninha, Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais. How could I be near a coastline and not do a horizon shot? The sea called and I answered. The unusual thing for me was looking west over the Atlantic. But not that unusual, because the sea, sun, clouds, and fog bank worked the same here as they do on the northern Sonoma County coast in California, which shares the same latitude. […]
