It’s always a much more satisfying view when you do this. July 27, 2020 — San Francisco Bay Area, California Arches are inclusive. Arches form bridges, not walls. Even the most delicate arch can form the strongest structure. (Nikon D850, Nikon 24-120mm […]

If you subscribe by email, please click on the blog title after you open the email. You’ll be taken to the actual blog, where the photo reproduction is much better than in the email. It’s always better to do this. July 25, 2020 — San Gregorio Bluffs, San Mateo County, California. Gertrude said, “There’s no there there.” Sometimes the less “there” there is, the more “there there” there is. There, I’ve said it. Gertrude was […]

July 13, 2018. San Gregorio Bluffs, San Mateo County, California. The bluffs over San Gregorio Beach are a favorite spot for me. They provide a high enough vantage point for me to see far out to sea with an […]

California / Photo Log / Photography

July 19, 2020 — Richmond, California No dramatic foreground. Mostly a practice shot. Conditions: Not so good. Hazy sky. Thin high clouds. Still, the tiniest wisp of the ion tail shows on my monitor, if not here. Seeking a clear dark sky. San Francisco Bay Area in July doesn’t like to produce such a thing. Tomorrow’s weather forecast looks a little better, however. (Nikon D500, Tamron SP 24–70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2. ISO 800, […]

June 19, 2020 — Point Reyes National Seashore, California . . .Had Turner been on the beach at Point Reyes with a camera. Which, of course, he wasn’t. This is an experiment in ICM — Intentional Camera Motion. As one might expect, the subject was moving as well, as waves are wont to do. (Nikon D850, Nikon 24-120mm f/4G VR. August 13, 2006, Big Sur Coast, California / June 27, 2017, Silicon Valley, California Gray day. The streak on horizon was the appeal. It was all there was. Shoot. Crap shoot, really. This was long before I was shooting RAW, so no direction home in editing. Gray on gray on gray. Blah. Nothing. Ain’t it hard when I discovered that it really wasn’t where it’s at… It sat in archives for almost nine years. One […]

January 17, 2012 — Sonoma County Coast, California Returning with new eyes to a shot taken eight years ago. I’ve just competed a series of webinars by Bruce Percy. He describes himself as a black and white photographer working in color. His sensitivity to tonal balance is inspirational and very instructive. This shot is pretty much the same as the way I left it the last time I worked on it almost three years ago, […]

California / Inspiration / Photo Log / Photography / Positivity

All over the world Every year, our friends and family waited with bated breath for our Christmas card. Every year we presented a photo of far-flung locales with the Muse and I and the boy. Sometimes the scenes happened almost as shown. We began the tradition in 2007 on the Sonoma County Coast. I told a business associate that we had to rent a helicopter to get the tree onto the rock. She believed it. […]

California / Flower / Hummingbirds / Photo Log / Photography

May 14, 2020 — The Back Yard, Silicon Valley, California Every April/May I engage in the Hummingbird Ritual. It’s a simple ritual, mostly involving standing around with a heavy camera/lens combo waiting for hummingbirds to feed on echium blooms. This requires four ingredients: Me, Heavy camera/lens, Purple echium blooms, and a Hummingbird. Thing is, despite shelter-in-place, my schedule has been less than accommodating, which has effectively removed the “me” ingredient for several weeks. When I […]
