June 19, 2020 — Point Reyes National Seashore, California . . .Had Turner been on the beach at Point Reyes with a camera. Which, of course, he wasn’t. This is an experiment in ICM — Intentional Camera Motion. As one might expect, the subject was moving as well, as waves are wont to do. (Nikon D850, Nikon 24-120mm f/4G VR. June 13, 2020. Silicon Valley, California. Submit. v. tr. 3. To present (something) to the consideration of judgement of another. Most of the other definitions involve demeaning oneself. Not something I cotton to. But that is the word used when one enters work into a juried exhibition and so that’s what I spent the better part of the past two days working on: selecting the works that I felt best represented the theme, on the […]

January 17, 2012 — Sonoma County Coast, California Returning with new eyes to a shot taken eight years ago. I’ve just competed a series of webinars by Bruce Percy. He describes himself as a black and white photographer working in color. His sensitivity to tonal balance is inspirational and very instructive. This shot is pretty much the same as the way I left it the last time I worked on it almost three years ago, […]

June 28, 1018 — Cape Saunders, Otago Peninsula, South Island, New Zealand If you go due south from this spot, you’ll come to Antarctica. If you go due east, you’ll hit South America. Either way, it’s chilly. It wasn’t all that warm right where we were on this winter afternoon, either. This is sort of how it looked. Kind of. (Nikon D850, Tamron SP 24–70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2. April 15, 2015 — Windy Hill, Woodside, California I was going to post something else today, but a look at an Instagram post by Óli Haukur inspired me to show this instead. Oli made the point that most photography instructors stress low ISO settings for low noise and therefore “best” image quality. Image quality these days seems to be based solely on low noise and extreme sharpness. His opinion is that, based on these criteria, […]

March 18, 2016, Los Gatos Creek Trail, Campbell, California. Not the peak of this season. Can I believe it was four years ago? I can. It was. Be well. Do Good. Be kind. Create. (Nikon D750; Nikon 28-300 f/3.5-5.6G Zoom. RAW processing in DxO PhotoLab 3.2; Editing in Adobe Photoshop.)

Dec 6, 2013 — Sonoma County Coast, California An archive dive. Taken within a few minutes of one that I posted nearly a year ago. An idealization / abstraction / impression of reality. The lives of many pixels were changed forever… Be well. Do good. Create. (Sony RX-100. RAW processing in DxO PhotoLab 3.2; Editing in Adobe Photoshop.) (WordPress has altered the tones on this. Click/tap on the image for a better rendition. I hope.)

February 20, 2020 — Los Gatos Creek Trail, California A floral palindrome. Mother Nature is very accommodating in giving me a place to start. (Nikon D850, AF-S VR Micro Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED. RAW processing in DxO PhotoLab 3.2; Editing in Adobe Photoshop.) More fine-art photography at www.amagaphoto.com

Clouds and Berms and Lines, Oh My

January 26, 2020 — Jökulsárlón, South Coast, Iceland Iceland’s south coast has lots of berms. The ones parallel to the beach are breakwaters and, presumably, the ones perpendicular to the beach are for flood control. Iceland also has lots of clouds — at least in the winter. This photograph has both. Iceland also has powerlines, which — much to my annoyance — clutter what would otherwise be many great shots. I normally do all I […]
